Time to say goodbye (75)

I feel it is the right time to say goodbye as I can't provide you with any interesting photos anymore. There are some more left, but it gets more and more difficult to pick something really new. This is therefore the last picture. It was taken in July 2007 at 1 a.m. I hope you enjoyed reading the blog and watching my photos. And thank you for the nice comments I got sometimes.

If I return to northern Norway one day, there might be new photos published here. I am also considering opening a new blog soon, so keep your eyes open, I'll post information about it here.

More rocks (74)

This photo was taken the same day as the previous one. As you can see, the weather wasn't really good (it was the middle of August). On the left, above the horizon you can see a grayish shade. If it hadn't been raining that hard that day, you could see the North Cape there....

Rock formation (73)

Today just this close-up. More photos of this rock formation coming soon!

Theme day: Paths and Passages (72)

Our theme day is this month paths and passages. This is the path to Knivsjellodden, the northernmost point of the entire continent of Europe (which is in fact located on an island...). The hike takes about three hours (+ of course another 3 hours to get back). It you look carefully, you can see two tourists on their way to Knivsjellodden on the photo.

Window (71)

The dark season officially ended today in H-vag. From now on there will be more and more sun every day until we reach the midnight sun. However, as I have left Norway, I'll have to continue posting pictures I took late December/early January. So one more photo from Christmas time. Enjoy!

Here come the promised photos from Hurtigruten ships: the old good Ms Nordstjernen and the new Ms Finnmarken.

Church in Hammerfest (69)

This is the church in Hammerfest. On my way back from Norway I had a short stop here as the first leg of my journey was with Hurtigruten and the ships always stop here. Unfortunately it was again Sunday (the last time I was coming back it was also Sunday!) so almost all the shops were closed, but on the other hand I probably wouldn't have taken so many pictures if they had been open;-)
This time I decided to travel with an old post ship - Nordstjernen. It sails along Norwegian cost only in winter time and it is really small and cosy. Unfortunately I only have photos of some details of the ship (it started snowing too hard when I was done which photographing Hammerfest and I didn't feel like staying outside anymore), but I will post one of them one of the next days together with some picture from one of the newest Hurtigruten ships - you'll definitely note the difference. This ship really has a style (even if it is difficult to capture it with a camera). The deck was extremely slippery!

Snow. A lot of snow (68)

The snow plough is running here more or less all the time cleaning the roads and putting the snow aside. During a big storm, which was rulling Magerøya for about 5 days everything melted down. But we didn't have to wait long for the new snow to come.

Winter in the far north (67)

That's a result of my new-year's-walk:) It's pretty windy, but fortunately the storm is over, it ended two days ago after 5 days of VERY strong wind causing different objects to fly and even breaking 2 windows in the house of my friend who lives here.

Cinema (66)

This is the cinema at the North Cape Hall on the last day of the year 2008. There were 2 Spanish tourists and 2 German tourists today at the North Cape. Plus 2 Guides (one at work, one having holidays and going for the tour for fun) plus 2 (as far as I know there were 2 of them) members of stuff plus 1 bus driver plus 1 snow plough driver plus his son.

Happy New Year 2009!

Narvesen (65)

This is NARVESEN - a Norwegian kiosk. You can find them everywhere, even in such small cities like H-våg.

Theme day: Circles/Spheres (64)

I forgot to sign in for the theme day. But still, this image has to be shared as there is nothing more typical here and it suits with the name of the theme day so well!

Announcement

As you have noticed, my dear readers, there aren't too many new entries appearing right now. This situation will remain the same until late December when I go back for some days to the very north of Europe.

Theme day: books (62)

Our theme day is this month books. When you look at my photo you wouldn't probably say at first that it is a book. But in fact it is one. On this fence the Sami reindeer owner have written down the amount of the reindeer missing. These numbers are quite big - every family needs 800-1000 to make their living from it, so it's not little when 107 animals are missing (even if this is the total number for 5 families who own reindeer living on Magerøya). Unfortunately I forgot to ask Nils about these numbers as it was a day full of experiences (see here, and here), so I can't say more about it.

The reason for posting this particular photo is that - as I'm not in Norway anymore - I have a quite limited amount of pictures to choose from (it is also the reason for posting less frequently).

Sardinian pasta (60)

This is original pasta from Sardinia. It's not really possible to get this kind of stuff up there on the island Magerøya unless you have flatmates who bother to bring such delicious pieces of their home country with them!

Yoik (59)

More info on yoik there:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoik

This is a very famous yoiker, but I don't remember his name (what a shame...). The photo was taken in September, during the party after the opening of the North Cape Film Festival.

Reindeer on the road! (58)

Such an image is nothing unusual in northern Norway, but the tourists enjoy it a lot. Once you've seen enough reindeer it starts being anoying as the animals don't react when the cars come. If nothing else helps and they don't want to go away, try barking.
